I did this on my '84, and it worked well. The main problem is I kicked the grille every time I got out of the car and knocked it loose. It was just a screen with a folded edge that fit in a slot. Choose the speaker carefully to avoid this problem. If I remember correctly I cut a semicircle (semi-oval actually) out of the metal part of the lower door and the panel to install the speakers. I'll likely do this again on my '85.

HEy guys, I am wondering if anyone has tried to put 4x6 elliptical speakers in the bottom of the foot well on the doors? There is an empty space in the doors and you would need to cut the hole obviously, but I am wondering if anyone knows if these fit and specifically if they fit with the factory cubbies on the doors belwo the arm rest? My driver side has the cubby holder and passenger is open. I know it will go on the passneger side no problems. In this case I will be just keeping the factory speakers in the door panels for show. Currently replaced with Kenwood 3-way 4.5 speakers but those are goign to the rear as they make it so the door doesnt really close right and the window cranks dont work. =
