Since the 2.1L already breathes "relatively" well, I think it would be neat to set these up on a Vanagon 1.9L or 2.0L AC engine. My buddy had the Dellorto version of these carbs on a built 1776cc in his '70 Sinka--it hauled donkey. We drove it from Oly down to SF fully loaded with two big BMW motorcycles, a complete drum kit, two mountain bikes and a bunch of his personal stuff. We were flying by the truckers up those steep grades in the Siskyous. With the CB radio on, we heard one of of them lament to his convoy mates "it's pretty darned humiliating when you get passed going uphill by a VW bus" We chuckled
