However the impression that NL is a hotbed of violence, international drug trade, and murder is far from the real situation. I lived there for 30 years and there were many years during that time when there was not a single homicide in the province during the year. The Newfoundland Constabulary were not allowed to carry sidearms till 1998, a controversial decision. There have been a number of deaths by police fire in the interim that would likely never have happened under old rules; they had guns in the trunk of police cars then but no sidearms, and usually figured out ways to defuse drunks or mental disease emergencies without lethal force. I think there have been more imaginary homicides in the seasons of republic of doyle than real ones in double the number of years. Now Newfoundlanders are not immune to bar brawls, and on George St. in St. John's there is the highest density of bars than almost anywhere, but usually nobody gets dead. > > Regards, > > Ted > > Theodore Hoekman > thoekman@gmail.com > 19 York St. > Newbury, ON N0L 1Z0 > (519)719-0342 > Blog:http://Tedspassivesolarhouse.wordpress.com > > On 2012-08-06, at 4:34 AM, Roger Whittaker wrote: > >> http://www.cbc.ca/republicofdoyle/videos/episodes/313---under-pressure.html
