Newfoundland has some quite extraordinary things to see, spectacular maritime seacoast and a lot of history. Being a bit of an archaeology enthusiast I would highlight the L' Anse aux Meadows Viking site and recreation of their settlement on the northern pennisula, and on the way to or way back a quick ferry trip to Blanc Sablon on the Labrador coast to see the Red Bay site of the Basque Whaling settlement actually probably pre-Columbian. They kept it secret so nobody else could horn in on their trade. In summer you can take the Argentia ferry which lands about 90 km from St. John's, and after looking at the East coast sights head back West on the Trans-Canada to the above named sights, and then back to mainland via Channel Port aux Basque. That ferry runs year round. The ferries are quite expensive, especially the Argentia ferry which is a long boat ride (14+ hours) and a short drive to St. John's the population center of the province. Port aux Basque is a short boat trip 4-6 hrs depending on weather conditions, and over 900 km to St. John's. I am in NL right now, but expect to be heading back to Ontario before too much longer, am converting an automatic transmission 95 VW Winnebago to manual, about half way through the transplant.
