A quick and dirty look at remnants of an old harness, and I think I see the plug you refer to.

Yours very likely has female push-on type connectors similar to this:

It's that raised tab that's stopping you. When raised, that tab bumps up against a step which keeps the connector from pulling out of the block. This type of connector is used all over the Vanagon.

Here's what I do:

- gently push the wire into the block, depress that little tab, keep it depressed while gently pulling wire out.

I use either a straightened paper clip, or my smallest jewelers screwdriver, to depress that little tab.
