hi..
that's stock - Fuel filter is mounted behind sort of a 'shock tower'
looking column in the left rear wheel well.
It's not as hard as it looks ...
undo two 10mm hex head screws..then pull the filter out soft of, then
undo lines.

it would be a little tricky and maybe possible  to attach new hose to
the old, then pull new in by pulling old hose out , lubricated with
something too, like WD-40.

I have seen a fuel filter mounted forward on a frame rail on the left
side , on a syncro, similar to how the fuel pump and fuel filter are
mounted on a frame rail on the right side, on a 2WD vanagon.

I have seen a subaru legacy fuel filter - a nice handy little unit ,
mounted in the engine compartment on a syncro ...
like it is on a legacy car , though if 'feels better ' to not have a
fuel filter in the engine compartment on a syncro.

yes, both feed and return line run together on a syncro ..sneaking under
the firewall heading for the left side of thing under there.
removing the gas tank is a big job ..
and turns into a restoration project most of the time, in my world anyway.
