The hinge support becomes a limiting factor for what size spare can get under there regardless of what modifications you make to the tray or latch. A 215 wide/27” diameter becomes a difficult limit both for diameter and width. Since you only have a 2WD tire matching for a spare is not needed. If going with the 225/55-17 tire I recommended a 195 or 205-14 on an alloy wheel will make a perfect spare for you and fit in the carrier. If you use steel wheels you will need to carry lug nuts (rear), bolts (front) to match.

Hi All, So I'm planning a move to 17" wheels. I'd like to carry a full spare, but from reading the archives realize that it won't fit in the holder. Has anyone modified that area to adopt a truck/SUV model where I winch/pulley raises and lowers the spare? Cheers, Harry |
