Many thanks for everyone's replies. Sounds like everyone is on the same page as I am. Neil posted a link to a very nice photo of a spade connector:

I think VW recognized the high current requirements of the headlight connector (even if they didn't do such a good job on the switch itself!) because the connector looks fancier than your typical spade connector. Here are some photos of the front and back:

It looks like it's silver plated to keep the resistance down but it doesn't look like your typical spade connector. I'll poke in there some more but if I get no action I might just cut the plastic housing apart. Sigh.
