Craig,

I can't say much for the Canadian part of your trip because I am not familiar with that area except what I read here (although we all know that Canadian citizens are the damn nicest people around) - However I have made a few trips to Maine and in doing so fell in love with Bar Harbor - sure it might be a bit touristy but it's a great place - there are several other (less explored by me) cool places on Mt. Desert Island as well. Portland is south of that and between is Rockland, Bath, Belfast - Bangor to the west of that (cool town home of Stephen King) - or just head up Highway 1 and you'll be sure to find some great places.

It's been many years since I've been out that way but I recall some pretty sweet micro brews when I was out there too.

I'm jealous - nothing like a few weeks to kill with no real plan or destination - have a great safe trip

Jeff
