That's the efficiency ... doesn't take as much energy to recharge the cold environment inside because not as much is lost due to use/opening. Opening the door of a front loading fridge, spills ALL the warmer and cold air out that front doorway. Top loaders "dump" the rising, warmer air out the top, while the colder air sits more stable at the bottom of the case.
