I > switched to an inline VW engine after that motor had gone 165,000 miles. > > Temperature gauge? What's that for? > > G. > I too have an inline in my van. I use whatever oil I find and change it pretty often. I found a whole case of 5w penzoil at a neighbors house, his widow gave it to me...So when I burn a quart and get low, I add some 5w....I slso qot a case of 10 John Deere tractor oil...I put that in too sometimes. Heck, my motor only cost $300 and it's run now just great for a hundred thousand miles since I got it, used. If it ever blows up, I'll get another and swap that right in.. In my diesel trucks, I do take a bit more care with oil selection...also the motorcycles...But the Rabbit/Jetta powered worker van?it gets 'left overs' some times and it doesn't seem to mind... If put too much 5wt in there the oil pressure does go down to about 55 from almost 65, but the oil warning light stays off and it idles with 20psi... I suppose I could put Amsoil in there at about $10 a quart like I used in my race car....and that one held 14 quarts....But an ABA VW inline motor of 93 vintage is not a race car. The motor only cost what I would spend on 30 quarts of the Synthetic oil... Ahh, the dreaded "Oil Thread" soon to be followed by "which tires should I get?" Don Hanson |
