Well, I worked on the "simple" fix for the broken windshield wiper shaft stud. Despite punching a good, centered dimple on the tip of the stud after filing it flat, I was unable to keep the drill bit from slipping sideways and so removed too much metal on one side. Back to pulling the dash. I may not tackle that for a while. It hasn't rained here in Oklahoma in a couple of months. Hey, maybe if I don't fix it, it WILL rain. mcneely

Then after getting back home I discovered the GoWesty procedure online. I am going to try it. You and a couple of others have said they have done it successfully. Of course, that doesn't mean that I will, but what do I have to lose? Just a part that is already broken, and if I do it well, I have saved pulling the dash (or paying someone else to do it).

Has anyone ever done this, and was the fix successful? That might be easier than replacing the shaft, especially if the dash must be pulled to do so. But, there is not much there to drill and tap. The GoWesty procedure says to file the stud off flat, punch the center, then drill it, then tap it. Interestingly, I mentioned such a possibility to the shop I consulted in Burlington, Washington a couple of weeks ago, and the guy just looked at me as if I was kidding, and said, "Never work, not enough metal there to hold anything even if you could drill and tap it." GoWesty's page seems as if it is something done with some regularity: http://www.gowesty.com/library_article.php?id=1512
