Thanks for all the great suggestions, photos and links. To sum up: Looks like people generally find room for 3 gauges fairly easily and most install to the right of the instrument cluster (sometimes at the expense of the ashtray). At least one person mounted low, under the heater controls. I appreciate seeing how they look on the pillar, they certainly aren't designed to fit there easily (thanks to Gilles for sharing that photo).

I recall someone had a configuration of one to the left of the cluster and 3 to the right, this may be what I end up with. At the moment I have a full sized tach sitting to the right of the cluster, I am considering moving that in place of the clock to make room. And I'll pick up the other questions using David's reply as a kickstarter.

They look like a nice way of putting 2-5 gauges in if they fit but the ones I see are meant for Beetle/Jetta/Golf/Passat. http://egauges.com/veh_mod.asp?VehMake=Volkswagen&CT=Cars > Part B: where and how do people put them if not A. I imagine others are interested in the mounting options so I'll keep this thread in the list rather than follow up in pmail if that's ok with the mod men.
