My my totally stock '84 had similar problems, climbing long steep hot hills in central Arizona, which seem to have been fixed by a new fuel pump. The old one was marginal. It was working OK for city driving, but not well enough for those conditions. Both the old and new pumps made/make some noise, but the new one is quieter.
