I'm having the same problem, just unplug the wire from the ignition
switch to the starter, and with another piece of wire with a connector jump
start the van using the alternator +, after putting the key in the start
position, of course. That should get your friend to a safe place where the
problem can be fixed. This should give you an idea what to look for:
