It would be nice if what the actual symtoms are was clear.

is it that it won't rev out right ? is it that it sounds like there are 25 bolts rattling around loose inside it ?

really ...if would be helpful if what actual symptom/s is the issue. cause it ain't clear to me.

IMO all these air-cooled roaches should be recycled, I just spent numerous hours on one because no one else locally could fix it.

it's symptom, besides being very weak on power is that , doing the pull-a-plug wire at idle test, it was never running on either or both of the left side cylinders.

fuel delivery out of the tank was a problem. filters and pumps were checked, swapped, fussed over etc. at idle, fuel pressure read near zero on the fuel pressure testing port on the left side.. totally weird. thinking about it at night in bed...realized a clog in the fuel rail ( it's not a twin fuel rail system like a waterboxer is .. and once AGAIN ..this is a perfect example of VW upgrading something weak, from year to year, version to version, engine type to engine type .. figured a clog in the middle of the all 'in line' fuel rail could produce the symptom. sure enough ..crap clogging the fuel rail right at the cold start injector in the middle of the long fuel rail.. thus ..fuel pressure on the right side , none on the left.

even after fixing that.. still either # 3 or # 4 made no difference pulling a plug wire at idle. we tested and swapped injectors ( I have about 60 spare wbxr fuel injectors, and zero spare air-cooled ones as these vans are junk in my opinion, and I have worked on a million air-cooled vw's and I never touch them anymore. ) .. anyway .. somehow in the end ..we got it so it was running on 4 cylinders at idle.w we fixed significant intake air leaks along the way. test compression ....etc. etc. etc.

PLUS ..air-cooled VW's tend to get LOTS of very hack work done to them.. plus the thing is 30 yrs old ... we got it finally ....it wasn't easy. heck..we even scrubbed out the insides of the metal fuel lines due to corrosion on the inside of those .. *another* nice thing about waterboxer fuel lines....all fuel hoses that can't rust on the inside and in a twin left & right side configuration, and NO Cold start injector. they're junk boys and girls !! LOL

so ...scuze my irritation.. I don't see that much wrong in the video other than it sounds like it's gonna blow up .. and 'maybe' it doesn't rev out.
