The procedure shown is actually correct for some waterboxers so give them just a little slack. The very first 83.5 waterboxers used the diesel tank and diesel cap and that material in the manual may have been carried forward from when it was the only variation of wbx tank/cap. Lots of repair manuals cover such a wide range of years/models that it is impractical to show every variation that comes along. The many shortcomings of the Vanagon Bentley don't strike me as much different than other manuals I have used. I wouldn't put absolute faith in any of them.
