Notwithstanding the other posts, I also run the same filter arrangement, ie: Fuel Tank>Small Plastic Filter>Fuel Pump>Cannister Filter. Like Bill, I have run this arrangement with both my 84s since 1997 with NO problems. I replace the Plastic Filter every other oil change as insurance to prevent any possible clogging. Same filter is on my 75 914, but a REAL bitch to replace verses the Vanagon. And they're cheap to replace.

I replace the Cannister Filter every 50,000 miles or 5 years, which ever comes first. And they're cheap to replace too.

Just my nickel's worth :)
