A point I overlooked.  As Alistair pointed out, it is the difficulty of repair on our vans (versus regular sedans with the stuff easily accessible) that makes it so bothersome to me.  But without this safety point, it would be the motor I would be fretting over having to replace, so I was wrong in my criticism of the system.
