It should not be done with a regular Thule rack and just putting the canoe up there. The side of the canoe would be bearing the canoe's weight. People do it with appropriate clamps so that the weight is on the gunnels, and not on the canoe walls. Special system for that purpose, usually seen on commercial multi-boat carrier trailers.
