To elaborate on BenT's post.....

I just replaced the cracked glass on a right side power mirror tonight. Bentley shows how to remove and reattach, but I don't have the book at my fingertips.

Basically if you look behind the glass on the sides, you will see a tab on each side. You turn either tab counter-clockwise to unlock the mirror from the motor (about a 1/4"), clockwise to lock in place. You will see 4 round nubs in the white plastic on the motor which locates on the corresponding holes in the glass backing. Once you have them located, just move the tab clockwise to lock in place.

I got the last NOS glass replacement in North America from Rennie at Santa Monica VW this week. They are now obsolete at VW, but Bus Depot might have a few and who knows what's still in Europe?

The pair I worked on tonight are going my 84 GL. Got tired of the originals folding back at 65 or above :)

With my left eye almost blind from a nasty cataract, I took my time doing this. I suggest the same.

Oh....going to have cataract removed next month once cheap-ass Blue Cross approves. Don't like straining the right eye while driving.

Good luck!

If so, insights on how to fix appreciated. I have not pulled it to look at how it is attached , but my battery died on my Civic while on vacation, so I have been using the Westy to commute. > John
