Given comments I'm seeing, lots of factors involved in engine life.
Maybe my "200K miles if it's taken care of?" should be qualified further!
A friends 1.9 Vanagon, when purchased some years ago, had low-ish original
miles on it. Don't know at what mileage, but in recent years the engine
suffered a head stud failure. It was "patched up", ran ok, but he opted for
a rebuilt.
Had the case stud not failed (or the hole in block. I don't recall), maybe
it would still be running in it's original form.
I have personally laid eyes and hands on that engine. It looked pristine to
me and I know the owner was very careful and adamant about maintaining the
engine.
My point: over the years, corrosion, stress etc. to this part took it's
toll. Maybe this is something the average informed owner would not expect?
Neil.
