That sounds like a great way to deal with the bracket ... or an alternative .... I cut it out, using a Dremel (or equivalent) with a cutoff wheel and cut the bracket out by inserting the Dremel through the ashtray hole. It left a couple of bracket stubs towards the top, but there is plenty of clearance for the head unit.
