Beautiful trip, I am envious.

For what it is worth, proper food storage in public camping sites is a legal expectation.  In National Park and National Forest locations, one can be fined for improper storage.  I don't know about California state parks.  But improper storage is dangerous, anyway.  If a bear indeed raided your cooler, that bear now knows that campgrounds and associated people stuff mean food, and will be back.  Though your bear was a black bear (no brown bears in California), they also are dangerous to people, especially if accommodated to humans and human artifacts.
