Campfire behavior differs considerably in England from in North America.  Boy Scouts in England used to be taught quite differently regarding this than American scouts were -- for example, not being told to clear all surrounding vegetation when building a fire ring.  At the time, I was told that was because there was much less chance of a fire escaping because of the wetter conditions.   Of course, American campfire behavior has evolved, and today we are told to avoid clearing new fire rings, and to avoid building fires at all in many locations.   mcneely
