I don't know it this is at all relevant or not .... but .... back in the early '90s my '84 wasserboxer would start and run fine if started from cold. It would also start fine after running for a time if I killed the engine and restarted it right away. However, if I killed the engine and didn't try to restart it for 10 or so minutes, it wouldn't start and was obviously flooded. I would have to wait for several hours before it would start normally again.

To cut a long trouble shooting story short, the problem turned out to be a bad fuel pressure regulator. It had a pin hole in the diaphragm. Replacing it with a new one completely cured the "flooding".

A few years later, my '85 wasserboxer developed the exact same symptoms and I thought, "Ahah!" I didn't even trouble shoot. I just replaced the fuel pressure regulator and that was indeed the problem.

I guess the point is ... more than one thing can cause flooding symptoms.

Mike
