But it may be the pressure that we should run when we put a couple of kayaks on top of a rack up top, a couple of bicycles on a rack on the hatch, load a couple of bags or boxes in the luggage rack, and load up with a weeks worth of camping supplies and gear, and add a couple of modern Americans. In fact, we probably should weigh the van when we do that to make sure we are ok.

I too have generally run 53 rear, 43 front on my tires that are 195R14 Kumho Radials. It has worked well for me, good road feel, good steering response, nice braking, no sway or wiggle, takes the wind well, and runs fine on back roads as well.

Did folks experience problems over the years with the lower pressures, and therefore VW upped the recommendation? The campers did not get heavier.
