Was it only 1st and 2nd that was lost or all gears? The most common cause of
losing 1st and 2nd is the pin separating from the 1-2 lever. A fairly easy
fix.
So is the input shaft separating from the main shaft.

Sorry for the confusion & lack of clarity - here's the best I can do to
state what's gone on: I lost 1st & 2nd gears with no warning. The shop said
that (as I had observed) everything feels & sounds good but no 1st & 2nd
gears. They pulled the tranny out of my parts van, put it in my daily driver
- works like a charm. The question remains - why the sudden loss of some
gears with no symptoms?
And no, I don't have deep pockets (my limited income is from my veterans
disability pension), the shop knows this and, to the best of my knowledge,
they have always treated me honestly and fairly. Based on some of the
responses I got I guess I shouldn't be posting until I learn some more.

For those of us who like to learn, fixes with no details are frustrating
indeed.

Thanks to those that offered moral support and suggestions when Wu-Wei went
on strike last week. I reported that she suddenly & quietly lost the benefit
of forward movement due to the transmission not working or the clutch not
engaging or whatever (can you tell I'm not a mechanic?}.
Anyway I got her analyzed and fixed at the Beetle Shop in Belfast, Maine.
The reason for the sudden & quiet loss of 1st & 2nd gears without any
forewarning remains a mystery. Any ideas?
Wu-Wei is now back on the road,
running smooth & we're gearing up for an extended trip to southwest
Florida.
