Are you sure their diagnosis is correct? If they're handing out prices like that, I wouldn't believe anything that came out of their mouths until verified. I had the same thing happen at a not-too-busy intersection (thankfully) a few months ago. The pedal had come unseated from the floor. Fixed it on the spot. Later, I was under the car repacking CV joints and noticed that in the front-to-rear length of the cable, near a crossmember in the back, one piece of plastic housing had become loose where it was supposed to fit into another. Put them back together like a tinkertoy and have not had any problem.

You need a second opinion if you can get one. Tell them to make sure to save you the old part, and hope they don't have a vanagon with a broken accelerator cable on the lot.
