On 1984 Vanagons, there is an output wire from the alternator that
disappears into the wiring harness and goes to a standoff inside that
black box on the left front firewall.  Often (due to the wire gauge
being a bit small) that wire will show evidence of overheating and the
ring connector could be corroded.  Addressing that problem can be
beneficial.
