I went with the Subaru and never regretted it but I did it myself (135 hp is nice). If you are going to have a shop do it find a shop that does (or has done) the conversion you want and keep in mind that ALL you are getting is an engine that let's your Vanagon drive like a regular car when you are merging or going up hills. It is still a 20+ year old machine. (There was a guy who spent a LOT of money getting a conversion done at a shop and was unhappy that it was still a 20+ yo Vanagon)
