Thanks Mark, I missed that note. The van in question (friend's '91 westy syncro) has a fuel gauge problem (needle not moving out of the red, even with full tank), had a look at it last night and we were on a different page of Bentley. Testing gauge with resistors on E5 connection on fuse panel shows that gauge is working full range, and a quick attempt (in the dark and van on ground) to pull connector at tank was not successful (was hoping to check wiring continuity). Our last option last night was to check sender ground.

We're praying it is not the sender itself that is malfunctioning.
