Assuming your drive shafts are still connected..... :)

Engine off, parking brake on etc. (safety first!) get helper or make video with a cell phone or ?, and watch if shift lever at transmission image: (minus the shift rod) http://tinyurl.com/8gt48vp moves in a distinct pattern:

Wiggling in neutral: lever ~ vertical, moves in/out.

1st: In toward driver side & back 2nd: Still in but moves forward 3rd: Out to pass. side & back 4th: Still out but forward

You should also hear the gears make an audible "clunk" as shifter moves from gear to neutral to gear.

If that's ok and you feel a distinct "H" pattern at shifter in cab, < shrugs >

And FWIW, here's an image of the internal parts Dennis speaks of:

Air cooled transmission, (this aspect same as WBX transmission). Clutch housing removed, looking downward from end of input shaft: http://tinyurl.com/c43e6zw
