I think that the "choice" of conversion is entirely up to the owner of the van. All conversions will offer more hp and if done right, better reliability. I personally was sold on the Bostig Zetec conversion. I did the job myself.

I think Stuart's point about the shop doing the conversion is probably the most important one if you're not doing the work yourself. Some conversions are more straightforward, some require more troubleshooting, and you'll want the shop to support you through the post-install phase regardless.

Also, I want to underscore Neil's point about location. If you live in California, for example, you won't be able to do the Bostig because of emissions regulations. I live in central rural Texas, where there are few Subarus to salvage and even new parts at the FLAPS require a day or two of ordering. Shops interested, willing, and able to do work on a VW van are few and far between. Even VW TDI's are rare outside of the cities. For me, the Zetec was a no-brainer, since we got plenty of Fords on the road and I wanted a well-documented system .

In any case, even if you're going to get a shop to do the work for you, I'd recommend you be prepared to learn about the details of your conversion so that at the very least you know what's VW in your van and what's converted. That way, if you break down on the road, you can clue a shop into the peculiarities of your rig and they'll better be able to diagnose and fix your problem.

Best of luck,

Jarrett 89 Westy
