I did my conversion in 1995 Diesel to gas. It took 3 months because the Diesel had an engine fire and parts were hard to find.  The Diesel Vanagon lends you most of the conversion parts you need for a diy engine conversion My inline-4 93-95 Jetta engine has been running since 1999. It was cheap to do-about $1,500. I did my own work. A kit like the Bostig or Subaru  as mentioned are great for non-techs. One that is waiting on the horizon as a kit is from Foreign Auto Supply: ---  http://www.foreignautosupply.com/20L_Inline_4.html What I like about the VW inline 4 conversion is that it's a VW engine. If there are VW engines that will work, I see no reason to use a non-VW engine unless those engines and parts are'nt available in your area. Here on the West coast Golfs and Jettas are plentiful. There are some things that can be done to get more than the rated 115 hp from the ABA  I use I will try next time around.  Robert1982 Westfalia

Overall what is the choice conversion out there and why? I have a 89 Westy, Manual, 2WD. And I am considering.

I know of the VW TDI Subaru, Multiple motors Ford ZTEC

I will be asking the shop to do the conversion itself.
