HI Dennis, I certainly respect your comments on what happened. I did suspect, too, that it may have been bad gas from the station outside Lynchburg. Maybe punishment from Jerry Falwell for being such a heathen and not going to church on Sunday, but rather returning from a VW event in a vehicle so hedonistic as a VW camper! All I know is that day I pulled out of Hagan-Stone park with a perfectly running Westy and not long after letting it get extremely low on fuel my symptoms started. And having dropped a few Vanagon tanks to do the reseal job, I do understand how fuel flows out of the tank and back. So maybe it was bad gas after all. Even though like you said its rare these days, this station was in Bug Tussle Virginia, so anything is possible!
