Joel.That sounds just like the problem I had on my 81 Vanagon.  New ignition switch cured the problem, added a hot start relay after the dash wires melted - I suggest the same. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1107767 - Tell'em John sent you!John
