Our '87 Westy with the original WBX is low-mileage and still running strong, but I found it interesting that among the copious paperwork from the PO is a page of notes on the I-4 gasser conversion.  She evidently had some concerns about the longevity of the stock engine and consulted her mechanic here in town about possible alternatives.  Looked like she'd have gone this route, and I kind of like the idea myself when the time comes. It appears to be the lowest cost approach and would have about the same benefits as a Sube, and would be gravel driveway doable.  It's not important for me to "keep it all VW," but if that setup works then why not?

My conversion was done with a similar 'attitude' to Neil's.  I didn't care to or have the money or time to learn whole new skill-sets like welding or electrical engine control systems like he did, but I was curious as to what the inside of a motor really looked like.
