A little reading tells me that season cracking in brass is specifically due to stress corrosion caused by the presence of ammonia. The stress is built in when they stomp out the terminal and crimp it to the wire.

Next time I feel like resetting the stupid radio code I'll take a photo of my battery terminal.

Meh. The entire vehicle is made of steel, why shouldn't the box be? The (a) purpose of the connector shell is to insulate live terminals from contact with other stuff, it's not reasonable to expect to have to insulate everything in the vicinity.
