My dumb thing is to leave the keys and the gas cap together sitting on top of the pump and don't realize it until I've climbed in to the drivers seat.

But, long ago, I began carrying a spare set of keys for vehicles because I had more than one time locked the keys inside. I even once when in the field for working removed all objects from my pockets before going into the water. I was many miles down a dirt road. Well, among the objects were the ignition keys. I locked them in the trunk.

Of course, VW took care of that one, by requiring a key to lock the driver's side door.

That didn't help me when I left the gas cap with keys on top of the gas pump just outside Glacier National Park and drove sixty miles before I knew what I had done. Drove back, and there was the gas cap with keys. That didn't teach me, I still leave the keys in the gas cap, but usually I place it on the passenger side floor -- not always.
