Already read lots of helpful stuff on this -- 3 questions: (87 2WD hardtop) 1. The McCafferty article makes much of some subtle shape differences between sides of the hub and cage, confusing since the old hubs and new ones don't look quite the same anyway. Bentley 42.9 says "insert ball hub ... into ball cage ... position is not important". Is it? 2. Bentley (same page) says "insert ball hub into outer ring ... chamfer on inside diameter of ball hub must point to ... larger diameter of outer ring." I am not seeing a larger diameter on that outer ring, looks symmetrical to me. Would someone clue me about what larger diameter that's referring to? 3. Old CVs have a single groove on outer circumference that faces out, i.e. either toward the wheel or toward the transaxle -- the boot caps attach to the opposite side. New ones (GKN) have a single groove near one edge and 3 grooves near the other edge. Which way should these be facing? Thanks y'all. |
