And while the dash is out might as well replace the heater fan and heater core. They are both due. BTW, you must remove the dash to replace this. I tried to employ the method that GoWesty has on their web site for drilling and tapping the stud and replacing the nut with a bolt, but I am too klutzy for such fine work, I guess. At any rate, I did not succeed, and had to replace the shaft with transmission. It really does require removing the dash. I did not do that myself, but rather paid 2 hours work to my mechanic. I think he got the bad end of the deal, but that's what he charged. Since the dash was out, I had him do some other things, like improve the movement of the cables for the heater and ventilation system, tighten up some things that were not bad, just open to inspection at the time. If you want to try the GoWesty method, you can find it described in their "Library" on their web site. If you do it, be sure to start the drilling with a very small pilot hole, then move up to the size required, maybe with an intermediate size between the pilot and the final bore. Other folks have related that they have successfully done it. mcneely ---- Dana Mueller <dmueller@WACK.COM> wrote: > Hi Folks, > > Recently acquired a 1982 Vanagon Diesel (stock).
