Subject: Images: Upper Control Arm Practice Welds Cut Open.
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hi all.

This is in no way definitive, but thought I'd post.

Did the UCA bushings on my '88. As with my '81, did a few practice welds on old part. Beads shown are longer than need be.

Although I didn't look under LH portion, the worst looking burn is basically surface. No divot. The other 3 spots don't look as bad. Basically, I didn't see a lot of damage to the rubber. Of course, there was some smoke. I did the passes fairly consecutively.

For the real welds, I kept a wet rag in a flexible ice pack. After each tack weld, waited a split second then put rag on to cool. NOT sure if this is good technique. Pulled each pass from arm collar to bushing.

I'm not a weldor, just a DIY guy, so can't speak to whether or not this fairly cold rag technique made for a "cold" joint. Tack welds looked fine in that regard, though likely not highly penetrative due to care taken. (tempo and speed of pass)
