Just like Chinese manufacturing, they can do it as well as they choose to. There's a much wider range of quality coming from China, but they both (as countries) can produce best-in-the-world quality. But this is actually a matter of calibration cost, I reckon. Not sure how they calibrate them - magnet strength? Is the cup spacing adjustable? Too lazy to go look...

Yep. The late '85 panel in my '84 was very nice.

All three of my speedos have oscillated at ?25-40? speeds. Lubing the cable hasn't seemed to help; I suspect the cable has a set. It's not the speedometer's fault, if it gets a smooth input it will deliver a smooth output. That right-angle bend in the cable to get to the front wheel is the culprit, I reckon.
