Well, I drive my '91 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Campmobile on several thousand mile jaunts around the country, including travel to back country locations on roads while on those trips (in those cases maybe a a few tens of miles at most, of course) that Forest Service, NPS, and BLM recommend for 4-wheel drive. Usually, I find that the recommendation probably should have simply been high clearance. I have sense enough to turn around when I'm stymied, of course.

If by anything exciting you mean serious mechanical problems, well, I try to keep up, but of course these vehicles are old. I've had nothing that could not be dealt with, and once I've gotten more comfortable with the vehicle, I haven't had much to deal with. mcneely
