The stock alternator if healthy (?) will deliver 90 amps at just over 12 volts. I've tested a few myself. Output does drop a little when hot but these things will try until there death. I have tried a number of high output alternatives over the years including some of the newer compact units. I now have one of new stlye 200 amp Delco knock offs in the motor home. Some of these other designs go into limiting modes as they heat up and the modified high output units that directly bolt in have very poor output at lower engine speeds and are almost useless for low speed/idle battery charging or even extended in traffic use as battery power is needed at low speeds.

The stock alternator will do a more than adequate job charging your house batteries. If anything get an adjustable regulator and tweak the voltage to 14-14.2.

Does anyone happen to know the continuous-duty amperage rating for the stock kinda alternator found on the 1.9? -- Jack "Rocket j Squirrel" Elliott 1984 Westfalia, auto trans, Bend, Ore.
