New German belts are about $5 each for the stock 2 belt system. I carry 2 sets just in case, a new fresh set and the last used set I swapped out for backups. Yes, I have had a couple diesel Vanagons with the factory single belt setup from late European models. Nothing wrong with it but the 2 belt system works fine too. I never had any trouble getting the short belts at PepBoys or places like that but the Conti brand are better.

I have owned at least 10 diesel Vanagons in the last 15 years. Still own a couple and my family has a couple more. All still have the 2 belt system they came with in 82 and 83. All have turbo diesels in them now.
