I pulled up the wrong fan - here is the one I used on the Jag.

I believe that modern after market electric fans work better than anything
out there that's 20 years old or older.
And for a while now I have installed a electric fan controlled by its own
thermostat in any older car I've owned. I installed the last one in a 1970
Jaguar XJ with a built Chevy 350 and it never runs hot even though the
on-line "experts" say you have to upgrade the original Jaguar radiator to
keep up with the engine load.
I wonder if the same upgrade would work on a Vanagon?
Here is the fan & control relay I installed in the Jag:

The thermostat feeds through the radiator core right next to the hot water
inlet.

It is a good thing to let the engine idle a minute or so before shutdown.
