I believe that modern after market electric fans work better than anything out there that's 20 years old or older. And for a while now I have installed a electric fan controlled by its own thermostat in any older car I've owned. I installed the last one in a 1970 Jaguar XJ with a built Chevy 350 and it never runs hot even though the on-line "experts" say you have to upgrade the original Jaguar radiator to keep up with the engine load. I wonder if the same upgrade would work on a Vanagon? Here is the fan & control relay I installed in the Jag: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Flex-A-Lite-16-in-dia-1980-CFM- 24-Volt-electric-fan/_/N-25r6?itemIdentifier=393351_0_0_ http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Compressor-Works-Cooling-Fan-Control/ _/N-91she?itemIdentifier=326162_0_0_&newYmme=true The thermostat feeds through the radiator core right next to the hot water inlet.
