Be sure to spin the alternator by hand when the belt is off ,
to check for bearing slop or roughness.
I find that medium commonly on 2.1 waterboxers ..or at least now and then.
As you may know ..the black bracket bolted to the engine block ( mounted
on two studs with nuts actually )
are sometimes found cracked, or just broken.
It's a classic weak waterboxer area, so check it carefully.
In a really bad case the studs are broken off in the block ..and that's
a real pain to repair.
I must have 4 or 5 'nicely broken' alternator lower mounting brackets.
Have fun !
